It wasn't part of our business plan.
It wasn't something I was actively pursuing.
It all started with a whim.
An Application I Never Expected to Hear Back About
As we were preparing to open Lemonade Collective, I came across an application to become a lululemon retail partner.
I thought, Why not?
So I filled it out.
Then I completely forgot about it.
At the time, we didn't even have a retail space. We were focused on creating a boutique fitness community where people could move, connect, and make life a little sweeter.
I certainly wasn't expecting a response.
Four Months Later... Everything Changed
Just four months after opening our doors—and after pouring our hearts (and a whole lot of sweat) into a complete gut-job renovation—the world shut down.
COVID forced us to close our facility just as we were finding our footing.
Like so many small businesses, we were left wondering what came next.
Then, months into the shutdown, an email appeared in my inbox.
"Hi Melissa,
Thank you for submitting your application. I would love to learn more about your business and see more pictures of your dedicated retail space."
I remember staring at the screen in disbelief.
To say we were excited doesn't even begin to describe it.
They Saw Something We Could Only Hope For
When I hopped on a phone call with the lululemon team, I learned something that completely surprised me.
They told me they loved our branding.
They felt our vision and the community we were building aligned beautifully with their brand.
The funny part?
They had come to that conclusion based almost entirely on a website I had built myself.
I had never designed a website before.
There was no polished retail boutique to show them. No beautiful displays. No professionally merchandised apparel section.
Just a vision, a brand we believed in, and a community we hoped to build.
Looking back, it's a wonderful reminder that people don't just buy into spaces—they buy into purpose.
We Didn't Have a Retail Store... So We Made One
There was just one small detail.
They wanted photos of our dedicated retail space.
We didn't really have one.
So we got creative.
We transformed a small area of Lemonade Collective's lounge—which wasn't being used during the COVID shutdowns—into a tiny lululemon boutique.
It wasn't elaborate.
It wasn't huge.
But it was enough.
While much of our facility remained closed, that little boutique allowed us to continue serving our community through curbside pickup. It gave our members and neighbours access to lululemon without having to wait for shipping or travel out of town.
Looking back, that little corner marked the beginning of something much bigger than we ever imagined.
